Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal condition characterised by widespread pain which is accompanied by fatigue and lasts for more than three months.
Fibromyalgia commonly occurs with other symptoms such as low mood or depression, anxiety, poor concentration, sleep disturbances or insomnia and headaches.
Many of these symptoms are similar to those seen in chronic fatigue syndrome.
The pain of fibromyalgia is however quite distinct and occurs in multiple sites of the body.
The nature of the pain experienced by patients with fibromyalgia can rage from mild muscle aching and stiffness to severe, radiating pain.
Most commonly, back pain, neck pain and shoulder pain are experienced.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine provide a powerful treatment option for patients with fibromyalgia.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has a 3-fold strategy for the treatment of fibromyalgia:
– Treat the pain and fatigue of fibromyalgia
– Treat the underlying factors contributing to the development of fibromyalgia
– Provide symptomatic relief by stopping the pain of fibromyalgia
This comprehensive approach addresses the symptoms of fibromyalgia as well as its underlying cause. This results in a decrease in pain and improvement in the quality of life for those affected by this condition.
